Would you still like some further information about the different interpreting modes? Then you'll find a brief overview here:

Simultaneous Interpreting

What is this?

Simultaneous interpreting is conveying what is said from one language into another language whilst it is said, i.e. simultaneously; this is the classic discipline in conference interpreting. Usually there will be at least two interpreters sitting together in a booth, interpreting spoken content for any audience members requiring this service.

When do you need this?

Simultaneous interpreting is ideal if your event is multilingual, tightly scheduled and especially if more than one person requires the interpretation. The decisive advantage of simultaneous interpreting is the time-saving aspect, since interpreters are interpreting what is being said whilst it is said. Anyone requiring the interpretation is given a headset. In this way, all listeners can follow the event in their preferred language.

What do you need?

A team of at least two interpreters, conference equipment (sound system, ISO interpreting booths, headphones, receivers, etc.).

Consecutive Interpreting

What is this?

Consecutive interpreting is conveying what is said from one language into another language, but with a time delay. The interpreter usually stands near the person who is speaking and takes notes. The person speaking pauses occasionally to allow the interpreter to convey what has been said into the other language. This lengthens overall speaking time, as the time it takes to interpret must be added.

When do you need this?

Consecutive interpreting is ideal when only a few listeners require an interpretation, when there is not a tight time schedule between speeches and/or when the event is mobile, e.g. tour of a machinery building or guided tour of an art exhibition. Consecutive interpreting can be appropriate for a variety of events. Get in touch – I’m happy to advise you on the form of interpreting most suitable to your needs!

What do you need?

One or more interpreters, depending on the duration of the event. Special conference equipment is not required.

Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI):

What is this?

Simultaneous interpreting on a digital platform and for web conferences. In this form of interpreting, interpreters connect remotely to a web conference in the same way as participants. The online platform must offer an interpretation channel.

When do you need this?

If you wish to hold a conference online (or in hybrid form) rather than in-person, but don’t want to forgo the interpreting service.

What do you need?

A team of at least two interpreters and an online platform featuring an interpreting function.

Whispered Interpreting

What is this?

As the name suggests, this is interpreting in whispered form. Whispered interpreting is mostly simultaneous. The interpreter sits or stands directly next to the listener and whispers the interpretation into their ear. Interpreters also often use the French term chuchotage to describe this form of interpreting.

When do you need this?

Whispered interpreting can be appropriate if you wish to retain the advantage of simultaneous interpreting (namely: time saving!) and only one person requires an interpretation, or if the premises doesn’t permit the installation of an interpreting booth.

What do you need?

One or more interpreters, depending on the duration of the event. Special conference equipment is not required.
